Hidradenitis suppurativa is a rare, long-term skin condition that causes small, painful lumps under the skin. It is considered to be a severe form of acne, and it usually develops in areas where the skin experiences friction, such as the armpits, the groin, between the buttocks, or under the breasts, and in areas with sweat glands. These lumps may break open, causing open sores that drain and may cause itching or sweating. The bumps may also become painful.
Hidradenitis suppurativa usually starts after puberty, or with great influxes in hormones. It is caused by oil glands and hair follicles becoming blocked with sweat gland fluid and dead skin cells. It can persist for many years and worsen over time.
Treatment options depend upon the severity of the condition. For mild cases, home remedies may work well. Try using warm compresses and regularly washing with antibacterial soap. In more severe cases, treatment options may include use of a topical or oral antibiotic, or a class of medicines called “biologics”.
